Hi,

Happy Spring!

I wanted to share some exciting news with you!  I have been
awarded my ACC (Associate Certified Coach) from the
International Coach Federation!  This is has been a huge step
for me!

It's kind of funny because I hadn't really planned to apply for
my ACC when I did.  I didn't think I had enough coaching hours,
I wasn't sure if I was really 'ready' for the live coaching
exam, etc.  But after my coach mentioned it to me and I stopped
to evaluate where I was as a coach, I found that I easily met
the requirements and I was able to complete my live coaching
exam with very little stress or angst.  As I think I've
mentioned before, I love coaching people, it just seems to come
naturally to me.  Isn't it interesting how when we're using our
gifts, we don't think anything about it?  What are your natural
talents? If your response is, 'I don't know', then I think
you'll be interested in this month's newsletter topic...

Have a
Better Than Ever month!

All my best,
Helen

Feature Article: What is Easy?

*************************************************************
What are you really great at?  One would think that would be a
pretty easy question to answer.  But to be honest with you, for
many people that can be a VERY challenging question to answer.

Lots of folks think that something has to be really difficult in
order for you to be great at it, or for 'it to count', or for
you to 'get credit for it'...  For example, I remember a few years
ago when I was working in Corporate America, my manager
suggested that I teach others how to do project management,
which is something that comes naturally to me.  My immediate
response to her was, "What's to teach, you just do this and then
you do that.  Everyone knows how to do that.".  My natural
ability to manage projects just didn't seem like anything
special to me.

So, what makes us discount the things that come naturally or
easily to us?  I think it may go back to the fact that we come
from a culture that was built on hard work.  If you have a skill
that comes easily to you, that means that you didn't have to
work hard for it and; therefore, it must NOT be worthy of
acknowledging or rewarding.  Consider what this type of thinking
creates...you have wonderful talents that you dismiss, ignore and
take for granted, while you persistently pursue other talents
and struggle to make them a significant part of your life.  I
get tired just thinking about that...how about you?

Why not let your natural talents shine through?  Which goes back
to my original question -
what are you really great at?  If you
aren't sure how to uncover some of your natural talents (things
that come naturally or easily to you), here are a few ideas that
may help...

1 - Ask folks
Often others can see our gifts more easily than we can see them
ourselves.  Pick three or four people that you trust and that
know you pretty well.  Either in-person, over the phone or via
e-mail, explain to them that you're trying to uncover some of
your natural talents and ask if they would be willing to help by
listing one or two natural talents that they have seen in you.
You may be surprised and overwhelmed by what you learn during
these exchanges!

2 - What is easy?
Take some time to think about what really comes easily for you.
Maybe these questions will help...
What have you been doing when you haven't noticed the
passage of time?  For example, when you were planning your
garden for the upcoming summer, two hours flew by in a flash!
Think about what you were doing during that time...maybe you
were doing some research on the internet about planting
different herbs, maybe you were drawing a diagram of your
garden, maybe you were planning the best time to plant certain
vegetables, etc.
Have there been times when you just instinctively KNEW what
needed to be done in a situation.  You hadn't taken a course,
you hadn't read anything, but you just KNEW how to get it done.
What did you finish recently, when you've actually said to
yourself, 'That was easy!'.
Responses to these questions may provide you with some insights
about your natural talents.

3 - Look way back when...
Sometimes our childhood and young adulthood offer clues about
our natural talents.  Think back to any awards, honors or
special roles you may have received or participated in during
your earlier years.  Maybe you were a wiz at translating French
or you wrote outstanding articles for the High School newspaper.
Do you recall a teacher praising you for doing something that you
just took for granted?  Or, maybe there was one subject that you
absolutely loved, but it wasn't a 'cool' class, so you hid your
enthusiasm.

Once you discover what some of your natural talents are...then
what?  Look at how your natural talents are being used (or not
used) in your day-to-day life.  Are there areas in your work
life that you can use these talents more frequently?  Are there
creative ways where you can expand these talents in your
personal and/or work life?  For example, if you have a talent
for writing great reports at work, you could expand that talent
by teaching your colleagues how to improve their documents or
help a child learn how to write an outstanding essay.

The more you are able to use your natural talents, the easier
things will be for you and quite possibly, you'll be happier,
too!

What’s Next for You?

*************************************************************
This month, take some time to figure out what some of your
natural talents are (please refer to the Feature Article above
for some suggestions as to how to identify these...).  Then take
one of your natural talents and write down three different ways
that you can use it more often this month.  After using your
gift more frequently for a period of time, say a week, take a
few minutes to notice...
What does it feel like to be using your natural talent more often?
What's changed?
How have others benefited?
What more can you do to spread your gift?

Would you like to share your talent search outcomes with us?  Please send an e-mail to
