Hi,

Can you believe that Memorial Day weekend is right around the
corner?  I hope you have a great long weekend filled with laughter,
friends and, of course, a great cookout!

It’s hard to believe that it we’re
almost at the middle of 2007…Wow!  I
hope it’s been a fantastic year for you!  And, you’ve been able to make
significant progress on all those "projects" that you have.  Last
month, I talked about the FUN process to help get you started on those
difficult to start projects.  This month, you’ll learn about
some tools to
help diminish that "little voice in your head" that can sometimes really
be a roadblock to progress.  I hope you find my suggestions helpful!

Have a
Better Than Ever month!

All my best,
Helen

Feature Article: Conquering Bothersome Thoughts

*************************************************************
Has this ever happened to you?  You’re getting started on
something…maybe it’s writing a report, or creating your family’s
budget, or it’s creating a plan for your new project… and
you get stuck!
You just can’t seem to make any progress at all!  When this happens
have you noticed what that "little voice" in your head is telling you?
Maybe it’s saying things like:
"I'm never going to finish this report." or
"Why am I wasting my time creating my family's budget?  They
won't stick to it anyway.  But if I don't do this we're going to run
out of money and then what will we do?" or
"This project is so big, I've never managed anything like it
before.  I can't do it.  What's going to happen when it fails?  Then
everyone will know that I don't know how to manage big
projects."
I suspect that you have experienced these types of bothersome
thoughts
and probably worse…especially at 2am in the morning.

These types of thoughts can really put the brakes on progress.  What
can you do to get these bothersome thoughts out of your head so that
you can
finally move forward on that next exciting thing?  Here are a
few suggestions…

1. What’s worked?
Think about a time in your past that you had a similar situation…what
did you do to move forward?  This may sound simple, but it can be very
helpful to recall what you did in the past to conquer these bothersome
thoughts.  The main reason this is so helpful is that you have already
been successful using a particular method and if history repeats itself,
you’ll likely be successful this time around, too!

As you think about your previous successful experience, it’s beneficial
to use as many of your senses as you can.  To facilitate this, here are
three questions that might help start the ball rolling:
What did it FEEL like to overcome the bothersome thought(s)?
Based on my past experience, how do I SEE myself succeeding
this task?
What did someone SAY to me, or did I SAY to myself, that
motivated me to move forward?

2. Box them up.
Find a small box with a lid.  Now, take a piece of paper and write down
one of your bothersome thoughts.  Then fold the paper and put it in the
box.  As you put the paper in the box, imagine that your
bothersome
thought is being delegated
to someone else and it is no longer your
responsibility.  Continue to put each of your bothersome thoughts down
on paper, put them into the box and delegate the concern to someone
else.

You can also create an electronic ‘box’, instead of a physical box.  Just
create a directory on your PC called ‘Box’.  Then create a document and
type in one of the thoughts that has been holding you back.  Save that
document and put it into the ‘Box’ directory…again, as you put this
document into the directory imagine that you’re delegating your
bothersome thought to someone else and it is no longer your
responsibility.  Repeat this process for all of your bothersome
thoughts.

At a later date, you can go back and read through the pieces of paper or
documents, if you’d like.  Often people that do this find that all of their
concerns were indeed taken care of for them!  Or, you can just remove
and dispose of them when the box gets too full.

3. Schedule ‘Bothersome Thoughts Time’
Set aside a specific time each day to focus on any interruptive thoughts
or concerns that you have had.  For example, you may schedule your
‘Bothersome Thoughts Time’ for 10 o’clock in the morning for 10
minutes.  This is the time that you will spend focusing on any thoughts
that have attempted to prevent you from moving forward.  What you
actually do during this time is entirely up to you.  You may think about
different ways to address these concerns, or you may think about what
it is about these thoughts that is so powerful, or you may want to just
‘sit’ with the thoughts and not actually ‘do’ anything.

By the way, this ‘
Bothersome Thoughts Time’ is the ONLY time of the
day
that you will spend any time or energy focusing on these
bothersome thoughts.  If a bothersome thought creeps in at any other
time of day, write down your concern on a ‘Bothersome Thoughts List’,
then very gently say to yourself, "I’m not going to think about that right
now.  I’ll think about that at <fill in the time of day you have set aside>."
Then, continue doing whatever you were doing before you had the
interruptive thought.  Often when you get to your scheduled
‘Bothersome Thoughts Time’ the concerning thought that you had
earlier is
no longer a concern

Scheduling a daily ‘Bothersome Thoughts Time’, allows you put time
aside to
acknowledge the importance of your concerning thoughts,
but doesn’t allow these thought to derail your progress.

By using one or more of these methods to conquer your bothersome
thoughts, you allow your concerns to be "heard" and addressed without
draining your energy and enthusiasm as you move forward!

What’s Next for You?

*************************************************************
Is there something that you really want to get done, but haven’t been
able to move past the bothersome thoughts swirling around in your
head?  Write down the task that you’d love to get moving.  Also, write
down what the outcome will look like…be sure to include as many
details and as many of your different senses as possible.  Then, pick at
least one of the three suggestions listed above and apply it to your
situation.  What happened?  How did it feel to know that you can make
progress, without that annoying little voice in your head getting in your
way?  We would love to hear how it went for you.  Please send an e-
mail to
mailto:Helen@BetterThanEverCoaching.com with a brief
description and I’ll include it in a future issue of ‘What Could Be Better’.
