How I spent my summer vacation...

Hi,

It’s not too hard to know that it’s
summer time on the Cape…the
tourists have definitely arrived!  And, it’s getting much more
difficult to take left hand turns…  It’s also so
nice to be
outside
and enjoy all that the Cape has to offer…like, three
types of beaches – the bay, the sound and the ocean, all of the
different band concerts (Chatham’s is really fun) and tons of
great restaurants!  There really is so much to enjoy here when
you’re on vacation, whether you’re a visitor or a year-round
resident!

Speaking of
vacations, have you had yours, yet?  We took some of
our vacation time already…I’m sorry to say it didn’t quite go
like we had expected.  If you’ll be taking your vacation soon,
I’ve included
some ideas to make sure that you’re in ‘tip top
shape’ as you start your vacation
!  I think that both Rich and I
will be keeping these ideas in mind for our next vacation later
this summer!

Have a
Better Than Ever couple of months!  This month’s
newsletter is a combined July/August issue.  See you in
September!

All my best,
Helen

Feature Article: How I spent my summer vacation...

*************************************************************
My husband, Rich, and I decided that we would take some of our
summer vacation before the tourists invaded the Cape.  We were
really looking forward to this time off, since it was our first
vacation in 2007!  So, we both cleared our schedules and were
getting ready to do all kinds of fun things on the Cape…like
spend time on the beach, paddle around in the canoe, ride our
tandem, go to some of our favorite restaurants - you know,
we
were planning to do all of the things that there’s never enough
time to do!

On the Thursday before our vacation, Rich wasn’t feeling very
well.  He had a sore throat and generally felt lousy.  The next
day, he still didn’t feel too great.  Over the weekend, we
didn’t do too much in the hopes that he would be able to shake
this ‘thing’ so that we could enjoy our vacation.  On Monday, he
felt a bit better and we did get to go to Heritage Museum to see
the incredible display of colorful rhododendrons.  But, on
Tuesday he was back to feeling lousy…UGH!  By Thursday, he went
to the doctor (without any suggestions from me, so you know he
felt awful).  He had a sinus infection and they started him on
antibiotics immediately.  Wouldn’t you know,
he started feeling
better just in time to go back to work…

Has this type of scenario ever happened to you?  What do you
suppose causes us to get sick just before we start our vacation
or while we’re on vacation?

Here are three things to keep in mind, as
you get ready for YOUR
summer vacation:

1. Don’t wait too long.  In Rich’s case, he mentioned in March
that he really wanted to take some time off.  Unfortunately, due
to our schedules we just weren’t able to plan anything until
June.  By that time, he was way past wanting/needing a vacation,
which really takes a toll on your body and makes you ripe to
pick up ‘something’ just as you’re beginning your vacation.
So…have you scheduled your summer vacation?  Down time is so
important to us on so many different levels – physically,
mentally and emotionally.  If you haven’t got your vacation time
booked…don’t wait until it’s too late.  Now’s a great time to
plan it!

2. Don’t be a crazy person before you leave.  It often takes a
great deal of work to get everything lined up so that you
actually can go on vacation.  That sometimes means extra hours
at the office or just a lot of extra stress to make sure that
everything is left in good order.  Add to that, all of the
preparations that you need to do if you’re traveling.  I’ll bet
you’re exhausted by the time you walk out of the door, which,
again, makes you an ideal candidate to catch whatever is going
around.  Creating a list of what HAS to be completed vs. what
you’d LIKE to have completed before you go on vacation may help
keep you better focused on your priorities and help you maintain
some sanity.

3. Take great care of yourself BEFORE your vacation.  Does this
sound like you?  You know you’re going on vacation, so you
figure that you don’t need as much sleep as usual because you
can sleep while you’re on vacation.  You also skip your regular
exercise routine because you’re trying to get everything done
(see number 2 above) and you figure you can exercise when you’re
on vacation!  Additionally, you’re not eating very well because
you just don’t have the time (again, see number 2 above)…  All
of these things can significantly increase your chances of
feeling lousy once you’re on vacation.  Instead, see if you can
take really good care of yourself BEFORE your vacation.  Maybe
you can even schedule some time to do something relaxing or
special (e.g., a massage) for yourself, which will help you to
smoothly transition into a great vacation!

I hope you have a wonderful, rejuvenating and healthy summer
vacation!

*************************************************************

What’s Next for You?

*************************************************************
If you haven’t scheduled your summer vacation, I hope you will
do that this month!

If you’ve got your vacation plans all set and you’re starting to
get ready, I’d like you to think of ways that you can
protect
your vacation
…yes, I said ‘protect’.  If you’re like most
people, vacations don’t come along often enough and you want
them to be GREAT!  So, it’s important to protect them, thus
ensuring that you are healthy and able to fully enjoy them!
What are
three things that you can do to insure that you are
really ready (e.g., healthy, happy, rested) for your upcoming
vacation?  We would love to hear all about your summer vacation
and what new approaches you took to make sure you were in ‘tip
top shape’ for your time off!  Please send an e-mail to
mailto:
Helen@BetterThanEverCoaching.com with a brief description and I’ll
include it in a future issue of ‘What Could Be Better’.  Please let me
know if you’d like to remain anonymous.
