Hi,

Whew!  It’s hard to believe that we’re in the last quarter of 2007.  This
year has flown by!  Are you satisfied with the way the year has gone?
Have you been busy?  Are you too busy, not busy at all or something in
between?  I find that from now until the end of the year, people are
busy, busy, busy!  I often wonder if being busy is a good thing, which is
the topic of this month’s newsletter.

Do you have a special way you combat busyness?  If so, I’d love to
share that with our readers.  Please send a short description via e-mail
(
mailto:Helen@BetterThanEverCoaching.com) and let me know if you’d
like to remain anonymous.

Check out the ‘What’s New?’ section to read about
my new
mini-retreat
, which was a terrific antidote to busyness for the
participants!

Have a
Better Than Ever month!

All my best,
Helen

Feature Article: When was the last time...

*************************************************************
I saw one of my neighbors walking back from the beach yesterday and
he asked how I was doing.  My response was
“Busy!”  After having
said that, I started thinking about how many times people respond with
that one small word.

I’ve noticed that some people talk about being busy as though it
validates their existence.  It’s almost as if you just have to be BUSY
otherwise, you’re not important, or you aren’t successful or you’re just
plain lazy!  Have you noticed this, too?

Busyness…  Yes, there is a lot to do.  You HAVE to go to work, pay the
bills, get the car inspected, pick up the groceries, cook, clean, do the
laundry, make sure the kids get their homework done, go to the doctor
and the dentist, and you can’t forget about getting some exercise…!  It
can feel like an endless list…

But even with this massive “to do” list,
isn’t there some amount of time
that you could call your own, if you really wanted to?
 What do you do
when you’re not so busy?  When was the last time, you…

spent an hour reading a book you wanted to read?
sat on the beach and just watched the waves roll in, without
thinking about something else?
did nothing for more than one hour?
went for a walk or bike ride not because it was good for you, but
because it was a beautiful day and you wanted to be outside?
really listened to your significant other, your child or a friend,
without thinking about all of the other things you should be
doing?
went on a picnic?
took a day for yourself to do ONLY what you wanted to do, not
what needed to be done?

It’s really fun to think about becoming “un-busy”, isn’t it?  Getting out of
your busyness rut can have
other powerful outcomes, too.  For
example, did you know that when you become less busy you will:

enjoy better health – it is believed that maintaining a constant
state of busyness can negatively affect your health, especially, if
you skimp on your sleep to try to get everything done

gain clarity about what you REALLY want from life – by staying
busy all the time, you never have time to think about what is
really important to you

be in a better place to figure out the root cause(s) of issues in
your life - some people stay busy because they don’t want to
‘deal with’ problems in their lives

love living the life you lead – if you’re always busy, you don’t
really get to BE WHO you really are, because you’re too busy
doing things!

I can hear you saying that you’d
love to not be so busy, but all this stuff
needs to get done and if you don’t do it, it just isn’t going to get done!
End of story!

Ah, but is that the end of the story?  Are you able to
‘let go’ of some of
the stuff that keeps you busy?  Obviously there are some things that you
have to do, like pay the bills.  But maybe there are some things that you
could do
less frequently, or less perfectly, or more efficiently?  Or,
maybe there are things that you could have
others help you do?  Or,
maybe there are things that you could
pay others to do for you?

There’s a commercial currently running on our local Cape Cod radio
station and it quotes Charles Buxton stating:

You will never find time for anything.
If you want time you must make it.

It’s so true…  I hope that you make some “un-busy” time to do
something you love to do or better yet, just to sit and
be you for a little
while!

*************************************************************

The Challenge: Are you in?

*************************************************************
Here’s a challenge for you…

Make a list of all of the things that keep you busy.

Then for each item on your list, come up with at least one creative way
to handle this item differently so you make more time for yourself.  Here
are some examples:

You decide to do the laundry every other day, instead of every
day.
You setup a schedule in which everyone in the family has a
night or two to clean up the kitchen after dinner.
You pay someone to clean your house, so you don’t have to!

Are you up to the challenge of becoming “unbusy”?  I hope so!

Would you like to share the ways you met this challenge?  Please send an e-mail to
mailto:Helen@BetterThanEverCoaching.com with a brief
description and I’ll include it in a future issue of ‘What Could Be Better’.
Please let me know if you’d like to remain anonymous.

What's New?

*****************************************************
I had the pleasure of spending last Saturday morning with an
outstanding group of people!  They participated in the premier of my
mini-retreat,
The Paradise Path – Stepping into Your Dream Life!

We met at the Marconi Station Site in Wellfleet, MA on an incredibly
beautiful fall day.  We spent a few hours immersed in this amazing
transitional environment, while sharing connections and uncovering
some long lost dreams!  It was remarkable to see the positive results
that emerged after just 15 minutes of
leaving the busyness behind!

I hope you’ll be able to join me when I offer this mini-retreat again in the
spring of 2008.  Please periodically check my website,
http://www.BetterThanEverCoaching.com for the details on all of my up-
coming mini-retreats and programs.
