Hi,

Have you ever stopped to think about how many different choices
you make in just one day?  The number would
astound you!  Our
lives are FILLED with choices: from choosing to get up in the
morning, to reading this newsletter (thank you!), to who you
will vote for in the Presidential Election, to what you want to
do to make the world a better place!  Some of these choices
‘just happen’ and others require quite a lot of work.  Then
there are probably other times when
you think you don’t even
have a choice
.  How can that be?  I hope this month’s newsletter
clears this up for you!

Have a
Better Than Ever month!

All my best,
Helen

Feature Article: You Always Have a Choice

*************************************************************
Choice is such a
powerful tool that is always available to each
one of us.  But, are there certain situations where you THINK
you don’t have a choice?  Are you absolutely certain that you
don’t have a choice?  It’s become very clear to me that no
matter what,
you always have a choice.

Let me give you an example.  For years I stayed in the
technology field, even though I knew that I wanted to do
something different.  I did that because
I didn’t THINK I had a
choice
.  How did I come to that conclusion?  Most of the time it
was because I talked myself out of having a choice by believing
all of the ‘scary’ thoughts that raced through my head, such as:

I'll never find another job that pays this well.
The devil I know is better than the devil I don't know.
My family and friends will think I'm crazy leaving this job.
I just can't...

But, I always really did have a choice.  It’s like my father
told me, ’
You always have a choice.  You may not like the
choices, but you always have a choice
.’

Once I realized I DID have a choice and I was the one making the
choice to stay in the technology field, it was
empowering.  Even
though I couldn’t answer all of the questions swirling around in
my head, I realized that
it was my responsibility to make a
choice
.  As you know, I finally did choose to make a career
change and become a Professional Coach.  And, now the one thing
that I keep wondering is: Why did I wait so long?!

It’s curious how we make so many choices every day on automatic
pilot: what to wear to work, how to get to work, what TV show to
watch, what newspaper to read…  We just go about our business
and make the necessary choices.  But often
when it comes to the
important things
in our lives, we say, ‘I don’t have a choice.
I have to _________ <you fill in the blank>’.  How can it be
that when it comes to these significant choices, you don’t think
you have a choice?

The next time you think or say those words ‘I don’t have a
choice.’ I’d like you use these words instead:

‘I choose to ________ <you fill in the blank>’.

For example, if your manager asks you to stay late to finish a
report and you promised your significant other that you would be
home for dinner, you may feel like you don’t have a choice – you
have to stay at work.  When you think about this situation, you
really do have a choice…you CHOOSE to stay at work to finish the
report.  How does that feel, when you use those words, ‘I choose
to stay at work to finish the report.’ instead of ‘I didn’t have
a choice’?  Does it feel like you’re taking responsibility?
Maybe it feels like you are
no longer ‘blaming’ someone else for
what is happening in your life…

It’s important to remember: Regardless of what you think,
you always do have a choice!

What's Next for You?

*************************************************************
Pick one thing in your life where you feel you don’t have a
choice.  On a piece of paper, write down all of the choices
associated with this item.
List everything you can think of,
even the choices that you don’t like or that seem too
far-fetched
.  Do you still choose to keep this situation the
same?  Have you identified some new options that may allow you to
change this situation?  When you’re done with this exercise,
state out loud,

‘I choose to _________ <fill in the blank with the way YOU
have DECIDED to address it>’.

Note how it feels to take responsibility for this decision.
Then, plan a small celebration for yourself!  Would you like to
share your ‘choice’ experience with our readers?
Please send an e-mail to
mailto:Helen@BetterThanEverCoaching.com with a brief description and I’ll include it in a future issue of ‘What Could
Be Better’.  Please let me know if you’d like to remain anonymous.
