5 Benefits of Day Dreaming
- Feature Article
- What's Next for You?
- Resources

*****************************************************
Hi,

We recently have been having a string of hot humid days here in the
Northeast.  Weather like that can really make you
lethargic.  I know it
makes me feel
lazy and I don’t really want to do too much, except maybe
read, nap or
day dream.  Do you do much day dreaming?  To be honest
with you I think ‘dreaming’ with your eyes open is becoming sort of a lost
art.  Yet, it can be
very powerful as well as enjoyable.  I hope this month’s
article – 5 Benefits of Day Dreaming – will give you some
very good
reasons to start dreaming!

I hope you have a Better Than Ever rest of the summer…see you in
September (hmmmm that reminds me of a song!).

All my best,
Helen

Feature Article: 5 Benefits to Day Dreaming

*************************************************************
Day Dreams…

When we’re little kids we have
tons of day dreams.  Do you remember?
Every day you’d have a different dream about what you’d do when you
grew up.  Maybe it went something like this…one day you wanted to be a
firefighter, the next day a veterinarian, and the next you were going to save
the world from evil!  You probably dreamed of having ice cream and cake
for dinner – as the main meal, not just for dessert!  And, maybe you
dreamed of living at the beach, or on a ranch, or in the forest.
It seemed
so easy to day dream back then…

Where did our day dreams go?  I vividly remember in school the teachers
telling me and my friends to ‘
stop day dreaming’ and ‘pay attention’.  Even
my parents would tell me to ‘stop day dreaming’.  Often it seemed that
when I was day dreaming I’d get in trouble.  So,
I started to believe that I
literally had to ‘stop day dreaming’.  Were you also told to ‘stop day
dreaming’?

How many childhood day dreams do you remember?  Do they reflect any
of your adult dreams?  I guess I should take a step back and ask
what
dreams do you have for yourself?
This is a question I ask many of the
people I coach, and it’s interesting to hear how many people don’t really
have any dreams.

I believe that dreams are
critical to unlocking the real you, which is
sometimes held hostage because:
we've put our dreams on hold
we've convinced ourselves that we could never live our dream or
sometimes we don't make dreaming a priority.

If you need to be convinced that dreaming is a great thing to do, here are
5 benefits of day dreaming:

1) Dreaming can be fun!
Although you may be out of practice, day dreaming allows you to think silly, crazy, unusual thoughts and no one else has to be the wiser.  It’s as if
you have this wonderful secret that you haven’t shared with anyone…yet.
People will be wondering what you’ve been up to because you’re just
sitting there smiling!

2) Dreaming can create a window into who you really are
Often what you day dream about may lead you to clues about what you
are naturally good at, what you gravitate towards and who you really
are
.  When I was deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up, I thought a
lot about the dreams that I had many years ago.  Back then, I really wanted
to be a teacher.  These dreams helped to lead me to my career in
Coaching because I realized how important it was for me to help people
do something better.

3) Dreaming creates ‘you-time’
In this hurry-up ‘I’ve got 10 million things to do’ society, wouldn’t it be nice
to just take a time out once in a while?  Day dreaming can be the perfect
way to
disconnect from your ‘to do’ list.  And, what’s really great about
dreaming is that it doesn’t cost anything to do, you can do it almost
anywhere, you’re not dependent upon anyone else and you
don’t need a
ton of time to dream!

4) Dreaming enhances your creativity
There are NO rules to day dreaming!  You can’t do it wrong!  And, the sky’
s the limit for what you can dream up.  By letting your dreams take off and
eliminate any restrictions, you can really
expand your creativity.  This may
even spill over into your ‘non dreaming’ life.

5) Dreaming can set the stage for forward movement
Are you stuck?  It can be so frustrating to know in your heart that you want
to be somewhere else in your life, but you just don’t know how to get
there.  Day dreaming can be a good vehicle to
play with various ways to
move forward
.  Before I made the decision to leave Corporate America, I
dreamed about what my days as a full-time Coach would look like, feel
like, and even sound like!  I dreamed about how much better my clients
would feel after we worked together and how Coaching was making a big
difference in their lives.  These day dreams were
very powerful and really
helped me make the decision to move forward in my Coaching career!

Now, if you’ll excuse me…I’ve got some dreaming to do.  I’m off to the
back porch to enjoy the fresh air and create some wonderful exciting
dreams for myself!

Happy dreaming!

What's Next for You?

*************************************************************
Do you day dream?  Over the next two months
I request that you make
time to day dream
more frequently, without putting limits on your dreams.
Is there an area of your life where you’re stuck?  If so, why not use day
dreaming to explore the changes that you’d love to make, no matter how
outrageous your dreams may seem.  Just spend some time playing with
your dreams!  Then at the end of August, take some time to think about the
day dreams you’ve had and
what ways they may facilitate your forward
progress
.

Would you like to share what happened when you started day dreaming?
