Hi,

Happy New Year!  Isn’t it fun to begin a new year?  As my coach pointed
out, “Everything feels bright, shiny and new!”

Speaking of bright and shiny, do you struggle with the Bright Shiny Object
Syndrome?  It’s a condition that affects many small business owners,
professionals, stay-at-home moms and even students!  I’m guessing
most people have experienced this syndrome at some point in their lives.
Maybe you’re been afflicted with the Bright Shiny Object Syndrome while
you’ve been running your own business (like I have) or when you’re
heading up a project at work, or looking for a new job.  Hopefully, the 5 tips
I share in this month’s newsletter will be valuable to you!

Have a “Better Than Ever” month!

All my best,
Helen

Feature Article:  5 Tips to Tame Your Bright Shiny Object Syndrome

*************************************************************
Believe it or not, all of us have been
challenged by the Bright Shiny Object
Syndrome
for years and years, without ever realizing it.

What am I talking about?

Take a second to think about when you were a kid…

Maybe
this syndrome began when you entered the local toy store.  You’d
start your Bright Shiny Object Syndrome walk down the aisles of toys
exclaiming, “
I want that one and that one and that one…” as you pointed
to all the different toys
you’d love to own.  By the way, many, if not most, of
the toys you’d pointed to, were ones you’d seen advertised during your
favorite cartoons!

Or perhaps, the Bright Shiny Object Syndrome would
hit you hardest
when you stopped at the
local penny candy store after school.  There
were so many delicious candies to
choose from!  You’d spend what
seemed like hours picking out all the different candies, again exclaiming “
I
want that one and that one and that one…
” as you studied the different
sugary offerings.

Today we get
bombarded with “commercials” on T.V., the radio, email,
blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and even newsletters (such as this one).  It
seems there are
lots and lots of people who have just the solution to
solve
any problem we may be having.  For example, let’s say you’re a
small business owner who would like to increase your business in 2012.
There are hundreds and hundreds of people out there telling you how to
do this.  They may have a product that helps you figure out your niche, or
how to do cold calls effectively or how to use social media to build your
business.  Whew!  It sure
can get overwhelming, exhausting and very
difficult to not jump from thing to thing to thing
all in the hopes of
figuring out
which “bright shiny object” is really the right solution for you.

Here are
5 tips to tame your Bright Shiny Object Syndrome:

1. Figure out, specifically, what you want.

Often these bright shiny objects
appeal to us because we’re not really
sure what we want
.  For example, if you’re a small business owner
looking to grow your business, it’s important to know if you want more
clients or you want to create a new product or new service.  The solution
for each of these choices will be very different.

2. Use explicit criteria to evaluate the bright shiny objects.
Once you figure out what you want, you’ll be able to create a list (mental
or written
…although I’d encourage you to have a written list) of the criteria
you will use to evaluate the solutions.  This can be anything from the way
the bright shiny object is delivered (e.g., product, teleseminar, in-person)
to what you’re willing to pay.  Having this information will
definitely weed
out
many of the contenders and it will keep you focused on what you
want.

3. Stick with your solution for a set period of time (that you define).
When we start something new, it may feel awkward, uncomfortable and
possibly like it’s not the right solution
.  Additionally, it often takes time for
something new to
become effective.  “They” say it takes at least 21 days
of continuous use for something to become a habit.  With this in mind,
when you’re experimenting with a new bright shiny object, it’s important to
give yourself enough time to experience the benefits and results before
jumping to the next bright shiny object solution.  By the way, during this
transition time, it’s also a good idea to
stop looking at the other objects
available, since there’s really no need to second guess yourself!

4. Do what they say.
If you’re going to commit to a bright shiny object, then follow the
instructions
to the letter for that object before jumping to the next object.  It
may be the perfect bright shiny object for you, if you are diligent about the
execution.

5. Be fair.
It’s possible that there is a bright shiny object out there that will do exactly
what you want it to do (remember number 1 and 2 above…); however,
more likely,
there is something out there that will do ALMOST what you
want it to do
.  Be willing to figure out the limitations of your new object.
And, be willing to admit when you just cannot
live with limitations, which
may mean it’s time to continue the search.

Jumping from thing to thing to thing is exhausting, unproductive and
often expensive
.  By using the 5 tips above, you can begin to tame your
Bright Shiny Object Syndrome!
Just think how wonderful it will feel to
know what you want, carefully evaluate the options and then
experiment with one bright shiny object at a time!

What's Next for You?

*************************************************************
Over the next month
identify one aspect of your life where you tend to
jump from thing to thing to thing
.  It may be how you run your business,
how you search for a new job or how you network.  Then, experiment with
the 5 tips above to tame your Bright Shiny Object Syndrome.  Take a close
look at how using these 5 tips helps you to
focus, put a plan in place and
make progress on something that may have had you “chasing your tail”
for quite some time.
