But during my tenure, I was part of a number of economic downturns that resulted in a reduction in force (RIF), which is just a fancy way of saying layoff. I clearly remember how difficult it was to pick up the work of the people who were let go. Morale was horrible. Rumors ran rampant and many people were very scared they would be next. But in each case, we were expected to work harder than ever to move the company forward during these downturns.
