It’s that time of year again, we’re faced with wrapping up one year and getting ready to launch into another one!

Some people are thrilled to be sending 2018 on its way!

Yet, others…well, they’d like time to stand still so it can remain 2018 forever. Unfortunately, stopping time from marching forward isn’t something that can be done (yet!).

Before you zoom into the brand-new year, please consider celebrating the ending of the current year.

Often people are in such a hurry to just get things checked off their to-do list, they don’t give themselves credit for what they have accomplished.  Has this ever happened to you?  It happens to me, way more than I’d like to admit!

Why do you think this is?  One guess is that our world puts a huge emphasis on getting things done and being BUSY.  We KNOW there is so much to do and only a finite amount of time to get it done.  The way many of us operate is to write the task down on a list, check it off and as a friend of mine has said, “rinse and repeat” over and over again.

As I write that, all I can picture is a hamster on a wheel going round and round.  Sometimes that’s what our lives feel like, too.

What if we stop the wheel, just for a short time to actually appreciate, acknowledge and savor all that we have accomplished?

Wouldn’t it be valuable to take a little time to look at how far we have come and spend time celebrating this?  When I talk about celebration with my clients, I often stress that a celebration doesn’t have to be big or expensive (although that’s what many people think it has to be for it to be worthwhile).  Celebrating your success can be as simple as giving yourself permission to sit down with your favorite beverage and read a book for 20 minutes or setting up a lunch with your good friend who you haven’t seen in months (because you were too busy getting all these things done!).

As if that wasn’t enough to convince you celebrating your accomplishments is good for you, here are a few more benefits:

  • INSPIRES MORE SUCCESS

Have you ever noticed when you’re on a roll (this can be a positive roll or a negative roll), it keeps going?  Celebrating your accomplishments is an easy way to keep that GREAT momentum and motivation going!  And, who wouldn’t want more success to keep happening, especially as you move into the new year?!

  • CREATES / REINFORCES A SUCCESS MINDSET

When you stop to acknowledge and celebrate the things you have accomplished, it is much easier to call upon these successes as proof, when you begin to doubt yourself (e.g., I don’t know what I’m doing…) or when you are starting something that takes you out of your comfort zone.  Having proof is more valuable, then just telling yourself, “You’ve got this.”  Your proof shows you why you’ve got this, rather than wishing or hoping that you’re going to be successful.

  • FEELS WONDERFUL

Celebrating is fun and quite simply it makes you feel terrific!  Think about the last time you accomplished something you were proud of.  Do you find yourself smiling, just at that thought?  Now, think about how GREAT it will feel to take a little time to sit in that place of success… Pretty WONDERFUL, huh?!

Now, is the perfect time to schedule a meeting with yourself to review your 2018 accomplishments AND to figure out how YOU want to celebrate the AMAZING progress you made through-out this year.
